Hellooo! I’m just bear to vent my thoughts! 🥹
What doesn’t make sense to me about ‘Elriel is endgame’ ‘Elain is going to reject the mating bond with Lucien and pick Azriel instead’ is if Elain wanted Azriel she could’ve just you know, chose him already? She’s had many of opportunities for that. And Lucien wouldn’t have been needed to be involved at all if that was SJM plan because like what is the point of that? The point of putting Lucien through that? He’s already lost someone he loved dearly, why on earth would SJM put him through that again when we know how intense mating bonds are? SJM could’ve easily set up the three sisters with the three brothers if she really wanted to. I really don’t think SJM has any interest in a rejected mating bond storyline with her main characters, she’s a fated mates author. And I really don’t think she’s changed her mind just because she’s written this flirty thing between Azriel and Elain. I think the fact such a big moment of a near kiss happened in the bonus chapter of all places is a big indication that their situation isn’t going to go anywhere or be a big factor because surely a near kiss that’s supposed to be important would be left for the main book? And it’s pretty clear that Azriel feels entitled to her because he’s envious and jealous of his brother’s mating bonds and is provably very affected by the Moor situation. Azriel has a lot of big feelings he’s never really addressed and like all characters in this universe he’s also deeply traumatised. I just don’t think Elain is meant to stay in the NC and all the little comments about how she looks in black etc through the last few books definitely gives me that impression. There’s a tonne of foreshadowing going on if you really pay attention. But tbh it’s kinda there staring at you on the page!
Anyways! I’ll stop rambling now! 🥲
Feel free to ramble away!
And yes, there’s just so much that Sarah could have done differently had she wanted readers to believe that E/riel was meant to be endgame. She could have realized Lucien and Nesta were not meant to be because of the harm they’d do to one another and not turned around and mated him to Elain. She could have not written Az as leaving Elain on Solstice, feeling shitty and sorry for himself then giving us completely different emotions after interacting with Gwyn, someone who isn’t even his friend (if that’s how he felt with someone who he’s just beginning to know imagine how he’ll feel around her after getting to really know her). She could have given us a bonus with Elain and Lucien, where he does stumble upon her and Az and that would set the stage for any political discourse, leaving she and Az to have to “hide” their feelings in the next book. But instead he was never made aware or if he was, he chose to respect Elain’s decision and then 5 months went by with absolutely nothing coming from it. Sarah could have written Az jumping in to offer Elain help in training her powers. She could have written Elain almost but not quite matching Nesta in NC black (because of course Nesta was always going to be shining the brightest for Cassian), it’s what she did with Feyre wasn’t it? How she looked like a goddess of old?
But she didn’t. She has continually done the opposite of everything that would make the majority of readers think E/riel is right for one another and that the NC is where Elain will thrive.
